Here is a modified bradford press. As you can see it alternates from a standard military press to a behind the neck press.

These are typically done by moving front to back by just clearing the head, but I prefer the full range on these.

Here is the late great J.V. Askem demonstrating the standard bradford press.

  • is 1 in the front front and 1 in the back considered 1 rep or two reps?

  • I would say that. We don't really count with this exercise as we only use it for a warm-up with light weight.

  • are you just alternating between front and behind the neck pressing? or is there something else going on?

  • Yes, exactly. If you look in the description there is a link to a true bradford press. Which is an alternating front to back press that barely clears the head.

    Thanks for watching.

  • @smittydiesel Is there any workout that hits All three heads equally?

  • Hah! Does this lift really need its own special name?

  • Thats not a bradford press!

  • @smittydiesel rocky balboa would do the same with chinups. i think its a good combo to add with this excercise, making it a push/pull superset.

  • 1 in the front and 1 in the back (basically 2 lifts) is considered 1 rep

  • awesome, but on the behind the neck part you should stop at eye level because when you go all the way down it puts your shoulders at risk for damage

  • hah

  • Basically it focuses most of the stress on the deltoids, particurlaly the lateral head via arm abduction and, if the elbows drop forward or a narrower grip used, anterior head, weights used are lower than normal. Following through full ROM with the press to fully flex the shoulder/extend the elbow will fire the triceps fully. This is why folks shoulders who only lower the bar to eye-line resemble sauce bottles! The deltoids get little stress. Partial presses are a phenomenal triceps builder.
