Please! Marriage is not some sacred heaven sent word. It is just a combination of two syllables that came from Old French in the 14th century. Marriage HAS changed over the years. First, it was little more than condoned rape. Then, it was mostly a property agreement. The idea of marriage for love didn't exist till the 13th century and it was rarely a reality till the 18th century. Marriage HAS changed before and will change again.
