April Wine performs their smash hit cover of King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" at the University of Reading in Reading, Berkshire England, for a 1980 BBC telecast of "Rock Goes to College". Lead vocalist/guitarist Myles Goodwyn states in this telecast that it's April Wine's very first concert in Great Britain... which took place shortly after the release of the band's 1979 "Harder Faster" album. Seen in this clip, is April Wine's most famous (three guitar) hay-days lineup; Myles Goodwyn, Gary Moffet, Brian Greenway, Jerry Mercer (drums), and Steve Lang (bass). They like to rock!

  • Tight!

    This is talent.

  • I like how the guitar harmonies at one point kinda approximate the jazzy saxes in King Crimson's original version. However I notice that even 3 guitarists can't beat what Robert Fripp could do on just one! No shame in that though. I'm just happy that April Wine helped popularize a very cool song from the prog-rock canon.

  • Jerry is a brilliant drummer. He's retired now. I saw them do this around 1980 and a little before that too and also in 2004. At that latter show Jerry still did a great drum solo and came out after to chat and sign my old Mashmakhan LP. What a champ and great musician!

  • i was a soundi engineer at this umi and i spent a very plesent 2 hours going round the local shops for some silver tape for jerrys sticks for his solo so the strobes would catch them we had a very wikd after show booze up all 6 hours of it in the top bar of students union

  • Saw these guys open for Styx back in 80.

    This was incredible live.

You didn't see too many drummers for an opening act launch into a drum solo. (didn't show it in the clip) Jerry Mercer blew everyone away.

  • the first one!

  • King Crimson, don't know which one!

  • who wrote this song

  • 2:29 the madness starts
