what do you mean it was an "ice column." what is that? how is that?

It is what it is. That ice column is about 200 feet into the cave. The mouth of the cave is about 200 feet wide, if not more. As for "water pools", anything that melts runs downhill into the cave or soaks into the sand. Nothing to hold a pool of water.
