'Twas The Night Before Christmas'

Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863) wrote this poem in 1822. Apparently, before it was published, St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, had never been associated with a sleigh or reindeer. Miss H Butler, a family friend of the author, sent a copy of the poem to the New York Sentinel who published it. A condition of publication was that the author was to remain anonymous. It was an immediate success but it was not until 1844 that Clement Clarke Moore claimed ownership when the work was included in a book of his poetry. Clement Clarke Moore was from a prominent family and his father Benjamin Moore was the Bishop of New York who officiated at the inauguration of George Washington. Reading 'Twas the night before Christmas' on Chistmas Eve is now a Worldwide tradition.
