Hum bekhudi mein tum ko pukare - 1958 film Kalapani (blackwater!). Singer: Mohammed Rafi (1924-1980). Lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Music by S D Burman, who initially composed/sang this raag "chhayanut" song in Bengali language. Stars: Dev Anand, Madhubala, Nasir Hussain, Nalini Jaywant, Karan Mehra. Writers: A J Cronin (original 1953 novel story, concept and source material), G R Kamath (screenplay). The film is based on A J Cronin's "Beyond This Place" that narrates the story of an untiring crusade for justice where an innocent man can also be sentenced to life imprisonment because of fabricated, fake evidence. Producer: Dev Anand. Director: Raj Khosla (Guru Dutt's assistant). This film won two Filmfare awards. The film's name "Kalapani" (Black Water) is derived from the mode of imprisonment in "Kala Pani", the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands in British India. The film shows the cruelties inflicted by British officials in India. This film's name "Kalapani" and storyline were later copied in 1996 in Malayalam film. The two films tell the story of "extremist freedom fighters" or "criminals" and "terrorists" jailed under British Raj in India.

Majrooh Sultanpuri lyrics:
Hum ummm hm hm hm hm aa aa aa chale gaye,
Hum bekhudi mein tum ko pukaare chale gaye,
Hum...
Hum bekhudi mein tum ko pukaare chale gaye,
Saagar mein zindagi ko utaare chale gaye,
Hum...
Dekha ki yeh tumhe hum banke deewana (2),
Utara ho nasha to hum ne yeh jaana,
Saare woh zindagi ke sahaare chale gaye,
Hum bekhudi mein tum ko pukaare chale gaye
Hum...
Tum to na kaho hum khud hi se khele (2),
Doobe nahin humi yoon nashe mein akele,
Sheeshe mein aap ko bhi utaare chale gaye,
Hum bekhudi mein tum ko pukaare chale gaye,
Saagar mein zindagi ko utaare chale gaye
Hum...
Rafi sahib passed away 30 years ago (30 July 1980), but his legend lives on as his voice still continues to entertain and amaze millions around the world. No one replace humble, modest and pious Rafi sahib who changed Indian film playback and music industry forever. He is a book on how to sing. His playback voice changed the fate of many Indian film actors and made them superstars of their time. I feel honoured to have met him, be his family's neighbour in London-UK. RIP Mohammed Rafi.
