This place opened in 1980 or so and it has done a brisk business ever since the word spread, mainly due to the watchful and attentive eye of Juan. He greets every person who comes through the door like an old friend he hasn't seen in years and serves a good product. I made this video during a typical Wednesday lunch hour and the joint was jumping. Three lunchplates, four Margaritas, a Bloody Mary and an order of Queso came to less than $50. I can spend that on myself at many places in Austin and not have near as much fun. Domestic beer is only $2 and for $2.50 you can get the good stuff. Me gusto mucho hombre! Been meaning to get there ever since I saw that episode you mention (I was on vacation in VA when I heard of this place...lol...too weird!)
I think my son wants to take up the challenge we saw on the show. I'll let you know how it goes if we ever do it. God Bless
