This video shows a screencapture playing native Linux UT2k4 under archlinux x86_64.

Since I have not found any screencapture software with similar performance as fraps under Windows I used my cheap Digicam to capture in VGA res. So video is a bit noisy.

Sorry, there is no sound since the integrated microphone is pretty crappy and I do not feel like capturing game audio externally. All my experiments to capture the audio internally on my Linux system (e.g. ALSA or OpenAL Wave writer) costed too much performance and simply give a wrong impression of the performance of the 3D drivers.

Note: The video sometimes seems to lag but I can confirm that the game runs fluently (above 30 FPS).

My archlinux x86_64 host:
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
- 4 GB DDR2 RAM
- ALiveXFire-eSATA2 Mainboard
- Sapphire HD 4670 Ultimate (512 MB - passive cooling)
- 500 GB SATA HDD

Arch runs pretty slick. I will set up WINE within a 32-bit chroot and check out how well this work. Expect some videos with WINE gaming under arch soon.

For those who are interested UT2k4 was played with the following mutators:
Excessive Overkill: http://excessiveoverkill.com/
Bloddy Mess (from Ballistic Weapons): http://www.moddb.com/mods/ballistic-weapons

  • ut2k4 usually has no big issues with sound. Pulse audio though sometimes causes major issues for all games under Linux.

  • What resolution are you playing at and what are you settings?

I have a normal laptop and I'm getting this game in a few days to play on Ubuntu.

    Right now my specs are

    AMD TurionX2 Dual Core Processor

    Radeon HD 3200 256mb video

    4gb RAM

    320 GB whatever HDD

My screen's max resolution is 1440x900

Will this still let me run it sexily?

  • @Bibo69:

Hard to tell. I do not know the speed of your HD3200.

Using the opensource radeon driver means a bit performance hit.

I switched over from archlinux with opensource radeon to ubuntu

10.04 with fglrx driver. Performance difference is like night and day.

I would use fglrx in your case.

On my other Ubuntu system (9.04) I have a NVidia 7900GS with

binary Nvidia driver and can run UT2k4 in 1280x1024 maxed out.

Oh well I tried the demo and it worked great maxed out. I didn't have that resolution option, my highest was 1280x854 because I have widescreen. Well I did buy it, but the problem is that my version didn't have the linux-installer.sh file. Could you possibly host it for a download because I've been searching for days, and every download link I come across is dead.

  • @Bibo69 Check out the lokigames installer at liflg.org

  • Very nice! But can you play Sauerbraten with the free driver?

  • @Eintrachtlion:

Not exactly...Sauerbraten started but half of the level (e.g. walls) were invisible. Keep in mind that the radeon driver for R600 and R700 chips is till heavy work in progress.
