This is one part of movie files extracted from edutainment software First Person: Stephen Jay Gould on Evolution (1995).
This particular title features a 5-part lecture by the late Harvard evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould, as well as some of his related essays and Charles Darwin's book The Origin of Species.
1. Introduction
2. Riddle One: Who was the Naturalist on Board The Beagle?
3. Riddle Two: Why Didn't Darwin Use the Word "Evolution"?
4. Riddle Three: Why Did Darwin Delay So Long in Publishing His Theories?
5. Conclusion
The First Person edutainment series was published by The Voyager Company, unfortunately the series was short-lived and, as far as I know, is no longer supported. Which is a shame as this is a very fascinating lecture, and I hope to preserve it by uploading the lecture movies into Youtube.
Part 1. Introduction (2)
@suddenlyitsobvious "Darwinistic atheists have such 'great' idols... "
Theist apologists have such "great" arguments...

Is that a wig? He looks like a professional dishwasher in a Burger King. Darwinistic atheists have such 'great' idols...

Agreed...let's use "Dissent with modification" as a sub. Much like one of my colleagues hates "survival of the fittest" and has replaced it with "survival of the most adaptable".

@nd5000 I sat in a room full of creationists and listened to him give a similar talk. Lots of crossed arms and unsmiling faces. It's the rare mind that's willing to risk the impartiality that is necessary to chance self induced dissolution of their very reason for existence.

He brings an interesting theory to mind when discussing Darwin's resistance to the use of the word 'evolution,' in favor of the phrase 'descent with modification.' I suspect that 'evolution' sort of clouds the thought process (that is, it is more difficult for the untrained mind to associate the word with its meaning). 'Descent with modification' isn't as simple, but it makes the idea much more realizable for everyone. I propose we bring back this catchy little phrase.
