Final Fantasy Adventure (FFA hereafter) is the first game of the Seiken Densetsu (Legend of the Holy Sword) series, known in the west as the Mana series. This is probably my favorite game on the original Game Boy. It has great 8-bit graphics and music, and more or less solid gameplay. You get a variety of weapons and items to use to explore dungeons and traverse the overworld, and you can choose which stats to give bonus upgrades to on leveling up. The game does have a slightly clunky interface, and the translation leaves a lot to be desired, but these are not the ruination of it.
The plot is pretty simplistic. An evil ruler, literally named Dark Lord, wants to take the power of the Mana Tree for himself, like another evil ruler, Vandole, did in the past. He is assisted in this quest by his sorcerer ally Julius. The player assumes the role of one of Dark Lord's gladiator slaves who escapes from the castle on the advice of a dying friend to find an old Gemma Knight (guardians of Mana) and warn him of Dark Lord's ambition.
The hero encounters Julius and Dark Lord near the falls, but Dark Lord pushes him off a cliff to the vicinity of Topple.
Thanks. This game didn't have the most user-friendly interface, but it did get the job done well enough for its time.

Great set of videos here. The only complaint I have about this great game is equiping/deequiping weapons to pass obstcales.
