actaully it was the other way around, when this elephent was to be killed they went to Edison and asked what kind of current to use, he said AC as he believed strongly in DC current and one of his major selling points on his light bulbs and generators was that DC was the less dangerous form. Eventually he gave out to AC current. DC would never work because it would bassically require every street to have a generator in order to electrify it.

apparently,Topsy had killed at least 3 of her handlers(because she was defending herself against their abuse towards her...they forced her to eat lit cigarettes etc...) so they decided to kill her by electrocution. they had thought that hanging an elephant would be inhumane. tho seeing this im not sure what is worse.
before they sent the electricity into her,they gave her cyanide to make sure she would die.
