Intense Strombolian activity on the floor of the Bocca Nuova, the largest of the summit craters of Etna, started on the late evening of 11 July 2011. Two days later, a team of volcanologists of the INGV-Catania, including myself, enjoyed a wonderful show, the first significant activity in the Bocca Nuova since more than 10 years.
The audio unfortunately suffers from the strong wind blowing during our visit, which also sandblasted our faces and caused intense pain in our eyes, and sometimes made small rock fragments land on our protective helmets. Some of the original eruption sound can be heard, especially in the first 10 seconds of the video.
At about 00:45, I raised the camera to show the Northeast Crater to the north, and then panned to the horizon, still tinged with the afterglow from the sunset not long before, and my colleague Mauro is seen, as he asks "Boris stai facendo video?" (Boris, are you recording video?)
More to follow soon !!!

  • The 2011 world chaos is acting up all over the world. Man made and natural disasters are increasing. Political disasters are in the making as terrible high level decisions are made strictly in support of special interest manipulators. The world monetary systems are sputtering and running out of steam due to decades of deception, lies and theft from the people's treasuries. Still, compared to the near future, we haven't seen anything yet.

  • @veniceit1 Be sure that this is just Etna doing her normal business, and I can tell you we've seen much more dramatic things at this volcano in the past :-D - as for the human side of things you describe, I do quite much agree, but nature is pretty much as it has always been, with her normal fluctuations, which only to us appear enormous.

  • Immagini fantastiche, ma l'audio è meraviglioso soprattutto nei primi 10 secondi. Grazie per condividere tale bellezza!
