In the transparent icon, apply "multiply" instead "normal" and the effect is gonna seen softer than this. It´s gonna look like a shadow. (sorry about my english, i´m not native english speaker).

In Illustrator this is called "Opacity Mask ".
Opacity masks support 256 levels of gray, meaning that you can create a soft-edged mask in Illustrator

I'd recommend moving away from Illustrator and using Xara instead. It's difficult watching people struggle with this cumbersome software, when Xara's transparency support is world class, and has been so for over 15 years. A video I made (attached) highlights its power.

ur mic really sucks xD

theres a new feature in ilustrator cs4 that has that like in fL

Just choose different colors on the gradient.. vary from gray to white or from black to gray to affect the level of transparency
I found out why I'm not getting 100% transparency. Instead of just 100% black, the black needs to be 100 c, 100 m, 100 y, 100 k. Thanks for your input!
