MONTE-CARLO, MONACO - Le 29 septembre 2006 (September 29, 2006)

Mes chers et distingués amis. Merci dêtre parmi nous. Au fond quand je regarde en arrière, je me dit que jai eu beaucoup de chance. Oui, je nétais quune enfant quand mes parents, mon frère sommes arrivés de Bulgarie à Paris en cette veille de Noël 1952. Les années 50 en Bulgarie étaient des années noires. Et moi jai eu la chance grâce au courage de mon père de grandir et dêtre élevée dans un pays dopportunité et de liberté comme la France. Mais cette chance ma accompagnée aussi tout au long de ma carrière et même si je ne devais pas revivre des moments douleureux, je dois dire que de lépoque des yéyés, la yéyé girl que jétais jusquà la femme que je suis aujourdhui, la route a été lumineuse et passionante. Et grâce à beaucoup dentre vous qui êtes ce soir, [et qui] faites partie de cette fête, merci dêtre là. [Je dois] vous dire que cest vrai, que mon métier ma permis en 1990, après la chute du mur de Berlin, de retrouver la Bulgarie. Le climat politique avait changé dans les pays de lest et jai eu envis de retrouver le pays de mon enfance, alors je suis retourner, jai pris mon courage à deux mains, je suis retournée. Les conditions de vie là-bas étaient désastreuses : Cest vrai en retrouvant la maison de mon oncle, qui était transformée en garderie, jai vu des enfants couchés avec le sol dans des draps salles et qui navaient pour tout repas que des pommes avariées. Et puis dans les rues, rien ne semblait avoir changé depuis 40 ans, depuis mon depart. Cétait toujours les mêmes queues interminables devant des magasins désespérément vides. Et les hôpitaux surtout, les hôpitaux manquaient de tout. De, saller de manque de coton, aspirine et tout dautres choses. Je suis revenue de ce voyage profondément bouleversée et à notre retour à Paris, mon frère et moi, nous avous decidé de créer cette association pour venir en aide aux plus vénérables, cest à dire les enfants. Cette association existe depuis 15 ans déjà. Cest vrai que beaucoup dentre vous nen connaissait même pas lexistence. Nous sommes une petite association faite de bénévoles uniquement qui ne sont pas payés. Je devrai les saluer ce soir et je dois dire que cest merveilleux davoir des gens de cœur qui sont join à cette action. Nous sommes petits, mais nous avons de grandes espérances. Et merci finalement à vous qui êtes là ce soir et qui allez contribuer à rendre tout ces enfants heureux. De la part des enfants bulgares, un grand merci à vous. My dear and distinguished friends. Thank you for being among us. Fundamentally, when I look back at the past, I tell myself that I was very lucky. Yes, I was only a little child when my parents and my brother arrived from Bulgaria to Paris on Christmas Eve 1952. The 50s in Bulgaria were dark years. As for me, I was lucky thanks to the courage of my father to grow up and to be raised in a country of opportunity and liberty like France.

This association has been around for 15 years already. It's true that many among you were not even aware that it existed. We are a small association made up uniquely of volunteers who are not paid for the work they do. I pay tribute to them this evening and I have to say that it's wonderful to have people of heart who are united in this great cause.

And above all, the hospitals had severe shortages of everything. They did not have cotton, aspirin and many other essential things. I came back from this trip profoundly distressed and upon our return in Paris, my brother and I decided to form this association in order to help the most vulnerable ones, I am referring to the children.

It's true that when I found my uncle's house, which was converted into a day-care center, I saw some children lying down on the ground in dirty sheets and the only food they had during their meals were rotting apples. And in the streets, nothing seemed to have changed in the 40 years since I left. It was still the same endless lines in front of stores that were despairingly empty.

I have to tell you that it is true that in 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, my profession allowed me to return to Bulgaria [Sylvie's homeland]. The political climate had changed in Eastern Europe and I had the desire to return to the land of my childhood, so I went back there, I took my courage in my two hands, then I returned there. The living conditions there were disastrous:
