  • Using your thumb to play bassnotes makes the rest of your fingers free. John takes good use of this on Under the Bridge to play around with the chord very hendrix ish. This would have been a lot harder and less precise if he had been using his thumb to pressure the bar chord, and had been doing the bar chords the way most people do.
