1960 Jeep Surrey Gala DJ3A
A surplus of bodies and chassis from a canceled Post Office contract left Willys with a problem of what to do with the inventory. The answer came in the form of the Jeep Surrey. Using the old 60 hp. flat head engine and the 2wd chassis they created the iconic beach buggy. Only approx. 1,083 were ever produced. Colors were pink, blue and green as you see here.
Credits to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass for the Tijuana Taxi which matches this little rig perfectly.
There was an error in the production #'s, I've corrected it.

  • i have one of these jeeps and it is sadly to far gone for me to do anything with. I would love to see it get restored to origional state but money is a issue on my part. I hopefully will get to it and enjoy it as much as you have.

Hi, my dad is the owner of this green jeep. He was just wondering what color yours was. Good luck in fixing it up!

  • @lharri71 You have to get your father on line!

  • @woody1072005 You wouldn't want to sell a rim so Jim could have a spare that works?

  • Motor is in again and working as it should. I would like to thank the former automotive machinist at the NAPA store on Ben-Mont Ave. in Bennington VT. for an enjoyable time helping a friend correct your mistake.

  • It is with some regret that I must report that the knocking noise heard at 1:48 of the video is the result of the rear main bearing being installed backwards. It would appear that the "fully qualified" automotive machinist wasn't. The motor is on it's way to another machine shop to turn the crankshaft and line bore the main bearings.

  • Thanks for the fun video, perfect tune you picked and it's a sweet ride! I think that the UP Postal Service might make a big come-back if they'd start delivering the mail in these rigs!
