UAA dance professor Jill Crosby traces how the religious dance of the Ewe people of Ghana, West Africa came to small towns in Cuba, carried there by enslaved Africans forced to labor in sugar refineries. Crosby shares dance footage from Cuba and explains how these religious rituals, including possession by deities during community dance ceremonies, continues as an important cultural and identity story for present-day Cubans.

  • Thanks for your research Jill, you're an amazing woman!

  • Extremely interesting findings and it's so wonderful to see that Dr. Crosby is not only recording the relationships but bringing it to life - even in Alaska!
