Five American men, students in their 20s from northern Virginia, were detained this week in the city of Sargodha in Punjab Province. On Friday, authorities confirmed that these men were linked to the banned Jaish-e-Mohammad group, which has ties to al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
[Usman Anwar, Sargodha Police Chief]:
"We arrested them, we have recovered their computers, we have recovered electronic data from them, and we have managed to break through into this group as well."
A Pakistani national is also being detained.
The men were in contact with militant groups in Pakistan through the Internet.
They were kept under surveillance for one and a half days before being arrested.
Neighbors confirmed that security men raided the suspects house, but they said they had no idea about the people who had been living there.
On Wednesday, the FBI released a statement that it was in contact with the families of the five suspects as well as law-enforcement authorities in Pakistan.
