  • The new series, is probably a sanitised and less angry version of the original. The new 'perrin' will be about his midlife crisis and less about the absurdity of consumerism and the throw away culture. I do not think we will see 'Grotto' return. This was one of the last great satires from the BBC, before they- and us, became appropriated with Thatchers shopping mall shitstorm The BBC now sell lifestyles and are told what to say by government. The UK is a fascist state now .

    There's only one Reggie Perrin

  • @openmouthinhales Grotto is back :D

  • @openmouthinhales Actually, the 1970s series was a pretty sanitised and less angry version of the original books by David Nobbs, where Reggie's despair and hatred of modern life come through much more strongly. And his daughter, Linda, has sex with Uncle Jimmy! If they had stuck to the original storylines, the thing would never have been screened!

  • @openmouthinhales Well you were wrong there.

  • I can't see something like 'When Helmand Freezes Over', 'Afghanistand by Me' or 'A Cock and Kabul Story' coming along any time soon....

thanks for your comment Comanchio. I do try....

And whilst not coming close to the original I thought the Clunes version was a reasonably decent 're-boot'. But no, not a classic gem of UK comedy.

For the USA I'm enjoying Big Bang Theory, long may it last.

  • Can't see how you'd re-make Dads Army, or It Aint Half hot Mum for that matter. Different reasons for being. The generation that watched them had been through a lot and were enjoying being able to laugh at it. Allo Allo was the next stage along, mutated a bit, bit too saucy seaside postcard for my liking.

  • @GriffinHistorical What's this??...a clever and witty satire in the comments on a Youtube video!! I'm sorry but I'm almost certain that's not allowed, judging by what I've seen I'm pretty sure you're only supposed to swear, or say things like "FAIL" or "PWNED"!;)

  • @Euterperocks I completely agree...I didnt get where I am today by watching Martin Clunes making a vastly inferior version of 1 of my fave comedies of all time!!

  • openmouthinhales I couldn't agree with you more. All the really great English comedy has died off, You just can't beat it and most of the US comedy is fucking shit, or they try to imitate the English stuff and it's shocking. It's like the British aircraft industry, died off too when they made some truely world class and world beating designs - like the Lightning and the TSR2.

  • My alltime fave television series. As for the remake, well, as much as I like Martin Clunes, the show simply has no soul. I'm afraid I quickly lost interest in the remake. This show had everything - the cream of British television actors, characters who inspired empathy and affection, great writing, great laughs, and a meaningful underlying message. THANKS for sharing some true BBC greatness!
