Wanted to provide folks some info showing the splitting performance of the new X- Series Axe & Hatchet from Fiskars. Crank up the volume, sorry about the low volume, the MIC on the recorder is very insensitive. Pardon some off-screen angle there, didnt realize a few times the field of view. Used to use a 15lb maul and never again. Used an idea from a few folks in Videos, using a Bungee around the log as you are cutting it VASTLY improves the handling/lack of running around. This 4.5lb Splitting Axe has excellent performance. The blade metal is somewhat soft which on the bad side takes dings easily if dropped or hit on the ground. The good side is that it takes an edge easily and those dings can be taken out easily. Came honed excellent from the factory and used the Fiskars sharpener to place a razor hone on it with a handful of passes.

Used to swing a 14.5lb maul but with back problems was looking for a lighter alternative but cannot afford a nice hydraulic splitter.

Bought the Fiskars sharpener which turned the already very sharp blade from the factory into a razor hone with only a few strokes. What other reviewers have written about the metallurgy is true, the steel is very soft. Accidentally dropped it from the stump about 12" onto the stone driveway and mildly chipped the outer edge of the tip. A re-sharpening will take care of it but be mindful of where the blade touches. A cutting block beneath the piece is a must to save your blade. Excellent splitting power not requiring full force/effort like the heavy maul did. Its true what they say about the handle being nearly indestructable. Have already had a handful of over-strikes due to not being used to a 36" Axe. This is the longest I have ever used and need to take another step back. The impacts were impressive. DOnt have any green wood currently it has all been dead to VERY seasoned dead material sitting for years. Fresh cut into 16" lengths about 8-10" round red oak that has been dead and down for 2 years split with one hit. Some VERY knotted pieces were tacked with two hits. Was VERY impressed and couldn't stop smiling the first handful of hits.

For ANYONE considering an Axe this is a MUST and dont think twice. Very glad I picked up the Fiskars sharpener, for like 10 bucks that too is a no-brainer and a MUST have if you buy any of the axes. Also bought the X7 hatchet to take care of smaller pieces into kindling but have not used that yet. Did a quick hone with that as well and these are as sharp as a razor. Its a tradeoff with the softer steel it has more probability of dinging but it also allow for easy sharpening. Takes no time to run it thru the sharpener to give it a fine edge before each use.

  • I have the x27 & it works great for most of the wood I chop. Although it won't handle everything I chop, so I still use my 6lb or 8lb maul & my wedge if necessary. The x27 is my first choice though.

  • @stoolie10 - Agreed, its great. I have been able to split everything I tried, to include 20" dead black locust. Its hard like a rock but using all my strength, sharp, 4-5 strikes & its open

  • Clever trick. And it is much safer then asking a kid to hold the wood.

  • @newtubetubetube - Yeah I had to find an alternate method since the wife was tired of holding it while I was chopping blindfolded...LoL Thanks for watching!

  • Btw ordered my x27 on amazon last night.

  • @dbest1a - Congrats. Its a great axe

  • John Candy.

  • @dbest1a - Agreed, I am wearing one in the video. Its the same one that folks use at Lowes/Home depot. Helps out a great deal.

  • If you have back problems, a brace would help a lot. I wear mine anytime I'm spitting, or cutting firewood.

  • I have the hatchet, and I need to get that sharpener, I have a few nicks in mine that need to be taken out. I am thinking about picking up a x27
