Hugh McColl, this year's private-sector recipient, is the former chairman and chief executive of Bank of America Corp. Under his leadership, the bank and its predecessors grew more than 50-fold, cementing Charlotte's position as the nation's second-largest financial center. He also was the force behind Charlotte center city redevelopment, a key driver of the region's booming growth. Recognizing that the city's leaders had to look beyond its borders, he and five others founded what is now the Charlotte Regional Partnership. Since his retirement from Bank of America in 2001, he has continued to broker transactions that spur regional economic development.
