Troops close in on No Fire Zone 27/03/2009

Troops of the 55th Division commanded by Brigadier Prasanna Silva have closed in on the No Fire Zone.
Heavy fighting raged near the fourth terrorist earth bund at Puthukudiyiruppu since yesterday. Troops of the 55th Division have to pass a difficult terrain rigged with booby traps. The troops doubt their safety from the coastal belt as well. The 7th Vijayaba Regiment and the 6th Light Infantry Force under the 553rd Brigade commanded by Mahinda Weerasekera is making heavy in the area. They are guided by Brig. Prasanna Silva of the 55th Division. High ranking officers are preparing the war plans with the 55th Division Commander and causing maximum damage to the terrorists. The troops are attempting to enter the No Fire Zone without causing any harm to the civilians.

Brig. Prasanna Silva told ITN that the 55th Division has passed the Chalai Estuary and entered Putumathalan. The troops have now positioned themselves two kilometers North of the No Fire Zone. They are aiming to rescue the civilians in the LTTE grip. The troops, advancing from Nagarkovil have advanced 65 kilometers on the North Eastern coastal belt. Civilians are daily crossing over in the night in boats. The LTTE is resorting to all possible means to prevent the forces from entering the No Fire Zone. The troops are continuously engaging the terrorists to rescue the civilians.
