Grouse is/was the most popular in Scotland because it is available and cheap, and not a poor blend. I turn to it myself at times, in England, certainly in preference to Bells which receives the biggest marketing here. In essence, Grouse does capture the simple (rfor drinking) grain/malt spirit in wood which makes scotch what it is.

@whiskeyminute Yes, I like JW Black also. I must admit it's been a while since I had any Grouse, so I may be doing it a disservice. Bell's is the one I really don't like at all in terms of a blend.

I started with the Famous Grouse.. Not bad. Now I have got hooked on the single malts. Cragganmore 1992. Glen Garioch 8 yr. Good Job Keep up the informative videos!! Speyside and Highlands Rule!!

No sir. That's real Scotch!!
Interesting that you're suggesting Grouse as a first Scotch to your (perhaps mostly US?) audience. As Ralfy says, not all Scots know whisky, so I suspect that its popularity is not necessarily based on quality. I personally prefer Teacher's if I'm going to drink a blend, but I don't know hw easy that is to get in the States.

Ralfy likes JW Black. He thinks Grouse has declined in quality of late. I generally like Grouse and think it's a good introduction to non-Sctoch drinkers. Teachers is available though not widespread in the US.

its wrong to say whiskey when you are talking about scotch whisky, sad really when you get so much of the other things right ;p
i too started with blend thougth only 2 bottles then i moved on to single malt which is much better especially the islay's :)

Thanks for you comments niksamatad. I'm cognizant of the spelling issues; on Whiskey Minute I talk about all types of whisk(e)y, so I chose to use the American spelling (I'm in the US).
