@BluTrilobite actually, politics had nothing to do with the F-22s victory. the YF-22 was VASTLY more maneuverable than the YF-23. and while the YF-23 may have been more stealthy, the YF-22 still maintained excellent stealth attributes, and was estimated to be nearly $100million cheaper(estimated cost for each YF-23 was $250million per plane). the YF-23 was a great aircraft, but absolutely inferior to the YF-22 in many parameters. not to mention the combat radius of the two were the same(~1480km).

@markmarcie2 Unfortunately, you see this a lot in defense contracting bids. Sometimes, it's not what your company can do, but who you know. This is also the reason why we don't use dragonskin body armor.

Technically, it wouldn't be Yakovlev's last military plane, since there's the Yak-130.

hymn to red october ?

I hate militarism.

lol if you know something about planes then you know that a second aircraft was built and dubbed the Yak-43, it was a stealth version of the Yak-141. Look at the Yak-43 from the top view and the F-35B. You'll see a Resemblance in Wing and fuselage design.

@markmarcie2 Agreed! The F-23 Blackwidow was a much better jet but the F-22 won mainly due to politics sadly. I would have loved to see a good old fashioned fly-off between the two ATF entries, the F-23 would have eaten the -22 for lunch!

@NeutralNegotiator In a last ditch effort to promote export sales, Yakolev offered cooperative development with any buyers. Lockheed Martin was the first to jump at the deal and worked for quite some time to understand the principles behind the vectored nozzle. Much of the research on the Yak-141 would go into the development of the F-35.
Has the F-35 flown in VTOL? Only in tests, and I highly doubt it will survive much longer due to political reasons. The Yak-141 was a pioneer aircraft.

@LOUISVART yak-141 used an engine behind the cockpit and vectored the rear nozle, lockheed martin bought this tech fom russians after the cold war, harrier used different trust vectoring, you see usa used ass much tech from russia as russians did from the usa
This is the father of the F35.

compare the F22 to the F23 it was in competition against, and the F23 runs away - longer range, much larger takeoff weight.. but the short range pig of the F22 somehow won out...
