The two-day summit `Natural Gas for Europe: Security and Partnership` has started in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia. The conference is being attended by representatives of 28 countries in the Black Sea region, the Caspian region, South-Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Russia, USA and the EU. It is expected that at the end the participants will come up with a joint declaration. The first session of the summit has already finished and first political statements have been done. The Bulgarian President, as the host opened the summit. Georgi Parvanov called upon the sides to assist the new Sofia energy declaration become a trustworthy partnership declaration implying that Europe should be supplied by the energy resources and the reliable routes going through the Caspian and the Black Sea Regions.

Georgian president accented the importance of Georgia and the corridor connecting the Caspian Region and Middle East to Europe. Mikheil Saakashvili said in this case, protecting Georgia`s interests provides the European security. The president emphasized the war with Russia and said the main purpose of Russia`s intrusion into Georgian territory was assaulting the energy corridor in order to deprive Georgia and the region of its energy functions. Despite this, Mikheil Saakashvili added, Russia could not impose control on the energy resources and hence, Georgia remains an ardent supporter to democratic reforms and its integration into energy structures is going on without hindrance.

The Georgian president has met with Richard Morningstar, the special representative of the new US administration in energy issues. Georgia`s status, as a transistor country, in the most reliable routes for Europe, that are Nabucco and the White Flow has been discussed at the meeting.
