"What Is That Thing?".
Billy Scott Coomber as 'Malcolm Desmond'

Moonlighting from Jack Paynes'BBC Dance Orchestra, Billy Scott Coomber made many records of popular hits for Crystalates Eclipse, Imperial and Rex labels during the 1930's.

Here is a nice song that I find I have two copies of. The records are both by different artists and have three years in difference between them. Was it a big hit I wonder, or was it a cheaper alternative to fill up the side of a record than one of the current 'super sensation hits' of the time ('blockbuster hit' sounds a trifle modern doesn't it?!).

From the days when Woolworths Sixpenny stores, ruled the nations High Streets, enjoy.

  • The other version is nicer. One can have too much of Billy Scott-Comber anyway :-) I can only think Jack Payne used him because he was one of the few vocalists who made Jack's voice seem okay...

  • Two of my favourites along with Cavan O'Connor (dance band stuff).

  • A nice Scott-Coomber record - I've always liked records with vocals by him (especially Payne's "What More Can I Ask?") Such an early-30's sound, and so British.

  • John Thorne popped in as Malcolm Desmond on eclipse.

  • Never heard before, what a nice surprise.
