Yep, you guys certainly made a mess of that.
And yes, going on the bridge triggers the portal storm, which destroys the ladder. It's best to wait for a few extra people at the top of the ladder before proceeding... just in case. Otherwise, people dieing and re-spawning on the bridge can backfire and give them lower health, less ammo, and completely defeat the purpose of the team teleport that triggers once the car is safe.
And yet for some reason, someone always runs onto the bridge.
