"VEX" stood for "Vernal EquinoX". VEXes were social events held on the Spring Equinoxes from, perhaps, 1989 to 1992. These events were continuations of the previous series of Time Traveler parties organized by the Krononautic Organism under the direction of Richard (Tryzno Ellsberry) wch culminated in the BIG EVENT to meet people from the future on March 9th, 1982. This film was made as a celebration of the 1990 VEX held at Swan Park in Baltimore on March 20, 1990. Swan Park was adjacent to the giant concrete pillars that held aloft a limited access highway. That's where this film was shot. I had graffitied one large letter per pillar in such a way so that if one stood at a particular place, also marked, that one cd read what these letters spelled out. Much of this film presents that. Another thread running thru it is the standing up of eggs on end by my girlfriend of the time, DeeDee Ranged. We were doing this b/c we'd heard that a woman artist organized annual events in a park in NYC for this purpose on the equinox - wch was, supposedly, the only time of the yr when one cd do this. According to Cecil Adams, of "The Straight Dope", this is actually possible any time. Dick Turner composed a piece called "Eloquent Voices" for car horns. A questionnaire was given to the people in their cars who answered the questions by beeping their horns in prescribed ways. Obviously, Dick's piece is the soundtrack here. This piece cd be sd to be part of a tradition that also includes Al Hansen's "Car Bibbe" (1958/59) & Robert Moran's "Thirty Nine Minutes for Thirty Nine Autos" (August 1969). One of the reasons for posting this film on YouTube is to promote Dick's work - I'm currently publishing a limited edition double K7 release of Dick's music that includes 2 short bklts - one of wch includes material about his "Smile Machine" invention. Also seen are the cars weaving around thru the pillars & Reverend Paul Summers' ceremonial magick. As a site-specific installation, Doug Retzler made a giant bird-house wch he installed high up on one of the pillars & wch can be seen at the end of the film. - December 25, 2009 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
