So anders war die Ziehrer-Generation nicht. Dafür war die Zeitdifferenz zu klein. Die Differenzen schlugen sich beim Ziehrer in einem "echten" Krieg nieder. Man lese über die Bosheiten, die dem Ziehrer von Johann, resp. dessen Frau Jetty, und später vor allem von seinem Bruder Eduard entgegenschlugen. Josef hingegen hat Offenbachs Musik (die ohenhin weniger Tanzwalzer umfasst) heiss verehrt und sie in zahlreichen Quadrillen adaptiert. Musikalische "Wettstreite" gab es natürlich immer.

thank you! you seem to aim to promote vienna waltzes. I love waltz very much. I have determined to look for all the waltzes that I feel beautiful in melody, no matter if they are famous or not. You know, sometimes you will find some pieces are good but no one knows at all. I know that Lanner is the competitor of Strauss, the senior. I like to read about the stories about the great waltz writers so I know this. Happy to share with you.

you got it. there are so many forgotten waltzes that are worth in every way to be rediscovered.

yes, Lanner was competitor of Strauss the elder. but in my opinion, Lanner actually is the true inventor of the vienna waltz. he developped that type of music more than anybody else. and i am sure if his son august survived, he'd have become as famous as strauss the younger !

Thank you for posting this; my mother discovered it and forwarded it to me. This is beautiful, very sensitively written and yet with the grandeur that characterizes the Viennese Waltz (to me, at least). I personally prefer Lanner's style, much as I generally prefer Josef Strauss to his more famous brother, but as the appreciation of art is very subjective I certainly admire all the contributors to the Viennese Waltz.
