Are there any accounts in sahih hadith where people are shocked or confused as to why a 50 year old man is marrying a 9 year old? If not, then I think it's safe to say that it was a normal practice.

Think of it this way, the age of consent in much of Europe in 1880 was 10, and in parts of America 7, before then they didn't even have an age of consent. Also In schools nowadays kids are taught to experiment with themselves after puberty, they tend to end up sleeping with half the boys they know or turning into wankers. Which would you prefer, a culture that tells people to be responsible and find a good life partner or one that teaches to became wankers and sleep around?
