After WW2, the French felt they had something to prove. They tried to prove that they where still a force to be reckoned with. They wanted their old colonies back, so they fought in Vietnam and in Algeria. Both wars where lost... The Dutch tried to get Indonesia back, but we also did not succeed. WW2 showed all the people that where living under European rule, that Europeans where not "supermen" and that they could be defeated by an enemy that was willing to go all the way...
