In French, "goualante" means a song popular and a bit sad.

I'm 15 years old and I'm in search of a good friend of about the same age who - like me - a very very very great fan of Edith. See you soon !

@Etheline There's also a double-entendre of sorts in Maurice's reply: a draw in French is 'un match nul', but 'nul' also means something like 'pathetic' or 'worthless' in everyday speech. Which explains the second part of the sentence: roughly, "maybe it's 'nul' for you two, but not for the rest of us." On the other hand, I have no idea what Edith is referring to when she tells Jacques 'now we're even', presumably some past event that the French public was aware of at the time. Best.

@salmig99 Thank you very much!!!!!

@Etheline Jacques says "one of Edith's songs I really like is La Goulante du pauvre Jean… and since Edith happens to be here…" She says, "well played, Jacques, now we're even". And Maurice says "Maybe it's only a draw for the two of you, but where we are concerned… what a show'.

ust listen for a moment To the tale of poor Jean Who the women didn't love But don't forget In life there is just one moral Whether you're rich or without a penny, Without love one is nothing at all Without love one is nothing at all He lived day by day In silk and velvet He slept in beautiful sheets But don't forget In life one is of little worth When our heart is cold Without love one is nothing at all Without love one is nothing at all

As far as I can make out, Jacques Pills says "...a song of Edith Piaf I like a lot, La Goualante de pauvre Jean. Look, here is Edith." Then Edith says "It is going well, we are ready" and the Maurice Chevalier says " It may be routine for her but for us - spectacular!" - or something like that. The song is a parable which says, more or less, "things don't matter, people do."
I really like this song, it is one of the more melodical ones..and she is pretty in this clip...please what Jaques says and what she says back? Thanks for this clip.
