I recreated the first flight of the H-4 Hercules or "Spruce Goose" flown by Howard Hughes in FS2004.

Enjoy!

EDIT: The song at the beginning is "Offshore", by Chicane.

  • This isn't meant to be real, the title SAYS FS2004.

  • this is cartoonish

  • It's a simulation game, of course it won't look exactly like real life.

  • is it available for fsx???

  • Most likely, I haven't checked though.

  • Howard Hughes was the man!

  • Don't see why everyone was busting his balls about making it out of wood. They wouldn't give him any metal. What was he supposed to build it with...bamboo and duct take?

  • @FrontSide407

Had it been made out of aluminum I doubt it would have left the water. Anyway, his team of designers pioneered some really innovative methods to make the wood strong.

The WW2 fighter bomber the DeHavilland Mosquito was mostly made out of wood too and it was remarkably strong and rigid. Its wooden design also meant German radar had trouble seeing them, and they were fast enough to outrun fighters chasing them.

Hughes probably worked with a similar mindset.

  • @FrontSide407 No, that was Mythbusters. LOL

  • Your should redo this without the lame black and white filter.

  • @FrontSide407 He was supposed to build it in a CAVE! With a BOX OF SCRAPS!

  • Yes. Just type 'spruce goose' into the Youtube search box.

  • @charlessmyth I cant believe some idiot thought someone was trying to pass this off as real footage.

  • Wood as used in the Spruce Goose, should be thought of an early form of carbon-fibre composite, and not what you make packing crates with per se. Carbon fibre composites are now used by Airbus and Boeing without condemning the practice as making planes out of cheap plastic. And the Spruce Goose, by using wood, managed to be a forerunner to the Airbus A380 in size and carrying capacity. It just didn't have powerful enough engines to make it work properly.

  • Guys...I know WHY he built it out of wood. The original comment was, "Why did everybody bust his balls about it." He had no other alternative.
