Edna May Oliver starred in 3 Hildegarde Withers movies, opposite James Gleason as Inspector Piper. This is the first, based on the novel of the same name by Stuart Palmer.

Filmed in the 1930s, it reflects the mores of the time, and shows how far we've come. Miss Withers has an integrated class of students, there are 2 blacks and an Asian in her class. Although the script has her making a stereotypical crack about her Jewish student, it is intersesting to note it is the black Abraham who finds her hatpin, and is shown to be so smart that he's already 2 days ahead in his homework. (And while she calls him a "good boy", that's because her class is filled with boys and girls, obviously).

  • Edna May Oliver, a great teacher of comedy! Thanks for posting!

  • Edna May.... goddess! One of my fav, fav actresses.

  • Terrific find! I've loved this movie for years. But sound quality is very poor.

Oh well, can't win 'em all.

I'm still glad to have it on Youtube, though

  • Thank you for posting this! I have always wanted to see it.

  • LOVE ME SOME DAME EDNA!! XXD aaaaw, look at how the U.N.'s rep'd thru all the pretty babies. LOVE IT!! & 2 think, those babies have all passed away. even if they were born in 1930, they'd be 81 now. LOL they sure knew how 2 make a tap on the chin & a trip-up look like serious knock-out incidents. ALI couldnt have done better LOL/XXD 2 bad there were only 3 movies w/ Dame Edna. her characters had such strong personalities, like in P&P and D.Copperfield. she gave it 2 that bro/sis but good. XXD

  • love this movie. If you ever upload it it in one viewing please let me know

  • Thanks for the post! This movie opens with a pan shot in Battery Park, or Castle Clinton to be more specific. Though supposedly set in New York, how come all cops( except Gleason) sound like they're from Wichita?
