Speaker: Drew Ivan

HyperCard was a category-crossing software authoring tool that was far ahead of its time. It was a simple database, a message driven programming language, a GUI design tool, and a hypermedia browser. It was distributed for free with every Macintosh sold, making it the novice's tool of choice for Mac programming. Although it is no longer sold or supported, its concepts and culture are worth reflecting upon.

  • we used hypercard extensively in my 4th-5th grade classes

  • I wish that Hypercard wouldn'tve ended. It was truly one of the most amazing things available for the Macintosh. I just wish that Apple would port it to OS X and leave it the same way that it was left -- perfect.

  • I had a whole company running on HyperCard. Why on Earth would Apple end this wonderful piece of software?

  • Hypercard was the best. I spent many many middle school days staying after in the library programming point and click adventure games.
