On the first weekend of October, Penn Rail Videos made the trek (with some good friends mind you!) up to the Valley Railroad in Essex, CT. In this video, we'll see scenes shot over the course of two days. Saturday was sunnier than Sunday, so don't be alarmed by the gloomy weather in some scenes. 2-8-2 Mikado #40 is handling the excursions, and she is quite a sight! Wearing a beautiful 3-chimed whistle, we'll follow #40 and her train north from Essex to Hadlyme. We'll then watch the train back into Deep River to perform the run-around maneuver. Once ready to head south, we'll climb aboard the Friends of the Valley RR caboose for a ride right behind (well in front of) #40 as she work upgrade out of Deep River. With breath-taking scenery, and fabulous equipment, the Valley Railroad is a place that no railfan should over-look! For more info on the FVRR, visit thier site at www.essexsteamtrain.com/fvrr .

  • @CSX6000 Is the Crosby 3 Chime on #40 the same kind of whistle that those logging engines in West Virginia use? Cause it sounds awfully familiar to those old shays and climaxes in the WV area.

  • @trainmaster844

    20Mph roughly.

  • I wonder, what's the track speed on the Valley Railroad?

  • @ooGAMINGoo

You may have been seeing the first return trip of the day from Deep River to Essex. At that point, the vast majority of people generally will have gotten off the train at Deep River to catch the riverboat, leaving few people on the train.

  • at 5:32 that is when you know the firer man has done his job right

  • The cars look empty
