Now we can see an example of how beyond the narcissistic and ambitious personality there's always a lack of healty self-image and confidence. He thought he had to tell all these lies to impress her girlfriend because he wasn't good enough on his own. This urge to cover the reality which he apparently thought to be pathetic escalated into a serious compulsion that lead to the murder. I wouldn't say he was smart, I'd say he's miserable.
