Some footage shot at Nicole's place in Henley Beach, in Adelaide's western suburbs.

There are two reasons for putting this video together. Firstly, there is talk of a permablitz group starting in the western suburbs, in conjunction with Transition Adelaide West and Go West Permaculture. This garden might well be a candidate for a blitz. Secondly, I wanted to show off my new Panasonic DMC-TZ7 camera, so that those of you who have been watching my permablitz videos will get an idea of get quality of future videos - at least in terms of video and audio quality. :P

Now, a few technical notes. The TZ7's native video format is MPEG Transport Stream, with H264 video (1280x720x50i) and AC3 audio. I imported the video clips using iMovie '09, which converts the videos into QuickTime movie files, using Apple Intermediate Codec for video and stereo PCM (SWOT) for the audio. It appears that iMovie '09 also de-interlaces automatically, since the resulting QuickTime files report their frame rates as 25 instead of 50, and I see no frame tearing in fast camera pans. I imagine that Final Cut would do the same conversion. Incidentally, the old Motion JPEG format is still available, but I wouldn't use it.

I haven't done any post-processing on the audio or video, save for the odd cross-fade transition between scenes. You'll notice that we have high-brightness, high-contrast video because of the afternoon sun, but at the same time, we got a cold wind off the sea, and you can hear how hard the wind cut function is doing on the audio. The optical zoom works well during video, although it's not ideally fast. I'm still pretty happy with how it all turned out.

  • If I lived there I would grow every subtropical plant species under the sun. That climate is perfect and I could have a palm collection second to none.
