The reason is simple - in the realm of flight all the "first" had been done - 1st flight, 1st channel crossing, 1st trans Atlantic, 1st jet powered......... The one thing left was the 1st supersonic commercial airliner. Your average Joe Bloggs will never be able to fly in a fast jet breaking the sound barrier. With Concorde and TU144 ANYONE could. Flying in a 747 or A380 you are not doing anything out of the ordinary. In Concorde you were. Besides it is beautiful and surprisingly small.
