He should have stood on the other side of the board, then he wouldn't need to block our view so much...

That is not true. Everybody had to cooperate with the authorities in the Soviet Union if they wanted to go abroad. He may have done that, out of intimidation. But he did not work for the KGB and had no special love for communism.
