Solomon Islanders lose out to logging - 16 Oct 08

The logging industry is the number one export earner for the Solomon Islands. But the country is cutting down trees at four times the sustainable rate. And the money brought in has destroyed tribal customs and encouraged government corruption. Hywel Davies reports from the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific Ocean.

China, Japan and, Korea also love to purchase logs from such places. In America and, the west, there are many WHITE people that dislike such things, including the announcer. You need to stop generalizing entire groups of people because it leads to faulty thinking.

oh! solo..... what happened to the isles of paradise. people back home become a victim to these money offer because they want the western life. the asian companys knows how to exploit this, go to local villages, try to be your friend, buy you beers and then try to scam you for your motherland trees. they even get you signing contracts which you can't read or understand big fancy english words.

Bloody hell most of my people are uneducated and poor thats why they give in to quick money, without realising this quick money never do them any good. Those few literate ones instead of using there knowledge to develop the nation theyhowever, fall into greed, pride and corruption. Gordon Lilo(former finance minister) is a share holder of the Earth Movers Group of company. It is the biggest logging company in the solomon islands. so the new loggin tax rate was remove from the government.

The problem is that corruption exist between all the stake holders, the loggers, Government and then land owning groups themselves. The hardship in the Solomons is the breeding ground of this corrupt practices....and like other Under developed countries, I don't think this practice would end in the near future in the Solomons...

this is the most biased bull ive ever read. the government that was voted in was the one that originally started the riots. it has been proven and that is the reason they had to step down from government. being married to another man has been going on for centuries. look at all other countries and it does bring money into the country to help them fuel their economy. it is not greed as this is the main source of income for the country. if theres anything to blame.
