During the bad era it was lighting and makeup that made him look much lighter then he actualy was as you can see the difference during the bad video and rehearsals. Mj even said this.

Omg when he was practicing the dance moves for Bad...he looked so sexy...talk about pretty boy!! Also I noticed he was much darker that how you know it was the lightening. A lot of people thought he was light from the skin condition but come to find out he was actually darker. From his last days, it could have been darker than he appeared
