One of Gladys Knight & The Pips early pre-Motown releases in 1964 was this stirring ballad written by Van McCoy (of "The Hustle" dance fame in the mid seventies). The song was titled "Giving Up" and released on Maxx Records in 1964.

  • thank you!!!

  • @blkshepherd I would agree with you only because Motown was dominating the airwaves back then but I have to say I saw them all at the Uptown in Philly and nobody made the girls scream anymore than Gladys and the Pips when they did this song. The Pips had a freeze move after the last verse that would just drive the girls crazy. So, I guess I'm saying that neither Mary nor Diana could touch 'em on stage.

  • @MegaGoldenleaf sorry but during this time Mary Wells ruled with My Guy and the Supremes took it to another level with Where Did Our Love Go. both in 1964. The world had Not quite heard Gladys or Aretha back in 1964 as it was Before both of their break out hits. Heard it through the Grapevine (1966) and Aretha (Respect 1967) I was back there. and Gladys was rarely heard. and Aretha was not played on main radio. sorry. this was the year of Mary Wells and later in the year The Supremes.

  • OUTSTANDING tune I once owned the single it's from the sound track of My Life. But the commentary pre play IS SUPERB!. Thank you, Bankman 58

  • Love this version and this era but Donny Hathaway's reworking of this song was on another plane...but that was Donny...

  • My mother loved this song. I was only 14 when this song came out. I love the remake by Donny Hathaway too. My firstborn child was buried Nov 4th 2011 and although this song is about the loss of a lover I feel the same way about losing my daughter.

  • One of the best songs ever recorded by Gladys Knight and the Pips

  • WoW...it was great to hear this song again.

    Thank You.

  • Donny's version is way better.
