Orson Welles' daring and visually adventurous production of William Shakespeare's classic play. Welles, one of the greatest directors ever, revered Shakespeare and was determined to bring his own versions of the Bard's work to the silver screen, though the studios resisted the idea. Without studio funding, Welles struggled for three years to make "Othello" with his own money. The film won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and critical acclaim but was rarely seen for many years. Over $1 million dollars in restoration work was spent, including re recording the score and re creating the sound effects, as well as updating the audio to digital. "Othello" remains a testament to Welles' legendary genius.
what a horrible restoration

@pretzelpimp Putting aside that I really love Orson Welles' work, I think that Welles' make up and hair looks more natrual that Olivier's. Because Olivier's just seems too dark while Welles sort of looks like a natrual tan than make up.

Fantastic rendition. Clarity and irony exploited to the fullest, and an interesting way of portraying Iago's evil nature: paricularly when it comes to his treatment of Roderigo. Thank you for posting this. Students have been directed to these posts.

how is it that Orson Welles in blackface is so much less offensive and ridiculous seeming than Olivier's. I think Olivier did a fine job, but it's hard to get past the blackface sometimes. Whereas I don't even notice with Welles.
