It's a musical!!!! Not everything has to be politically correct. It was made in a time when being politically correct wasn't something that was constantly obsessed about and honestly the character isn't actually asian in the show, she's pretending.

With "Progressives" like Woodrow Wilson and Margaret Sanger, who wanted to sterilize non-whites, who needs racists?

nigerialivesinme: i present you with a perfectly logical argument and you rebut me by calling bullshit and citing hearsay around campus? don't join a debate team anytime soon.
unacabezadolce: this play is a PARODY. meaning it's not meant to be taken seriously. also, don't use the word "progressive" when you're trying to call someone racist. as i recall, that term is inherited from the progressive movement of the early 20th century which sought to improve society by "whitening" it.

Stereotypes embodied in the characters play a significant role in cementing & proliferating racist images, attitudes and perceptions. This is also how blackface became taboo. Sorry, but when a stereotypical person of color is portrayed as a villain, the first thing an audience is going to do is associate villainous/evil characteristics with the race. I wish I could say that W&M is much more progressive than that, but I didn't like quite a few of the reactions I heard in the crowd during the play.

bullshit. heard racial jokes all over campus today and it aint playin out friendly harmless neither

The character in this trailer is the VILLAIN of the show. I believe that sends the message that being a racist is bad. Observe: racist=villain. villain=bad. therefore, racism=bad.

It seems you have watched neither the show, nor trailer.. the musical's featured villain is a white actress PRETENDING TO BE CHINESE. It may be said that this show's villain is culturally insensitive, even racist. But is this a problem? No.
BTW, this show came out in 2002. It won Best Musical. The Tony Award voting committee is made up of theater professionals from places all over the world, including Asia. To your credit, they could all be racists...
Not righteous. Ignorant.

A school actually let this play be advertised and enacted? Is this really 2012 or back to the 60s where minstrel shows and yellowface actually won awards for being "art"?
