The reason is like the other person pointed out - students who show talent for sports aren't encouraged enough. I studied in India before moving and if you didn't perform well in academics, you were thought that you wouldn't get anywhere in life. It was really sad, because most of the average students are the actual bright ones, while those who score good marks are usually rich and manage to buy their way. Things are changing now and hopefully we'll see more of this in the future. :)
