As of May 2011, the EU's Worker Registration Scheme will cease to exist - that means that EU citizens can work without a work permit all over the bloc, including in Germany, and will also have full access to benefits. There are no minimum wages in Germany for many workers, and in these sectors in particular, many fear an onslaught of cheap labor from Eastern Europe. It raises the question: How much do you need to earn to get by without social assistance?

  • Maybe, he should find another job and/or find a cheaper apartment, if he has not done so b/c the last thing you want is the wages to increase which makes it harder for employers to hire, thus increasing unemployment. And with a higher unemployment, there would be fewer people making fewer good and services and they would be more expensive.

  • Where I live the minimum wage is 160 € a month. The rent for an one room apartment is 60-100 €, one liter of gas costs 1.2 €, one liter of vegetable oil costs 2 €, a loaf of bread costs 0.35 €. But my country is not like Germany.
