January 26, 2012 -- Sen. Begich thanks the crews of the U.S. Coast Guard Icebreaker Healy and the M/V Renda for their successful delivery of fuel and heating oil to Nome, Alaska, on the floor of the U.S. Senate. This is the first time in history that Nome received a fuel delivery of such a magnitude in the dead of winter.
He also addresses our nation's need to develop our Arctic infrastructure, invest in additional icebreakers and keep America from falling behind other Arctic nations amid their efforts to develop the Arctic. Furthermore, he touches upon the need for a robust science program and accurate weather reporting by NOAA and state-of-the-art tracking satellites.
