He could be vegan... but buddhist have there beliefs. If he went vegan and he though it would upset people and they would lose honour and in effect feel judged he could not do this. So while most of the time he might never eat meat he can't say anything that would make other people feel less about themselves. It's part of there beliefs to put humanity and compassion before self. And this includes eating meat. If 70% of the world was vegan and he would do what upset them the least most times.

The Dalai Lama loves veal and pork and he's been seen in restaurants eating it practically RAW! He claims he has to eat meat becuase he has hepatitis, but the truth is MEAT is NOT GOOD for hepatitis considering them chemicals and even hepatitis found in pig meats. and 50% of all meat has MRSA in it and other antibiotic resistant infections.
