A fallout shelter is an enclosed space specially designed to protect occupants from radioactive debris or fallout resulting from a nuclear explosion.

In the U.S. in September 1961 the Federal Government started the Community Fallout Shelter Program.

These photos were taken by myself after answering a challenge from the website www.conelrad.com looking for documentation of existing signs. It became quite the hunt and I continue to find signs still in place, almost 50 years after the now-defunct program started. Many thanks to Bill Geerhart and the staff of the conelrad website for originally publishing some of my photos on their Facebook group page. Thanks for the push!

Visit www.conelrad.com today. And check out their Facebook page Conelrad-All Things Atomic. Clarence Phillips would want you to do so.

  • I live in milwaukee Wisconsin and have never seen the signs anywere

  • @xNateInHD Where in Milwaukee? I'll tell you where to look.

  • are any of the shelters still working? or are they decommissioned?

  • Pretty sure that most of the shelters just have the signage, if any of them had any supplies they are most likely long gone.

Amen ! Don't stop stocking it......one day (soon I fear) it will be used.

  • we steal have the sighs in the U.S.A.I have seen alot.

  • i have a fallout shelter in Indiana its old but i re stock it every 9 weeks

  • I have seen a fallout shelter sign at this building that is now part of a church, im not sure what it first was. It also goes pretty deep underground.

  • I go to Marquette high school in near downtown Milwaukee. Marquette built a fallout shelter during the height of the cold war and the school still has the fallout shelter but, the sign was taken down and put on the inside of the door for the shelter. I am also pretty sure we now use the space for storage although I cannot be sure because students are not allowed near the area of the shelter itself.

I also remember the U.S. Cellular Arena has fallout signs all over it. It still creeps me out to
